MUNCHIE MONDAY: Lemon Rosemary Water
Here’s a refreshing beverage I hope you’ll enjoy. I’ve been reading so many articles about the health benefits of lemons and they are very abundant. It turns out that Rosemary has a few here and there as well.
I saw a recipe for Rosemary Lemonade online but for a few weeks now I’ve been making lemon cucumber mint water at the office. The process is a simple infusion by leaving the sliced ingredients to soak over night and a gallon usually lasts about a week, getting tastier each day.
I wanted to use the same process with the Lemon Rosemary water so I put a medium sized sprig into a 32oz. container with a small sliced lemon. I added a few ounces of steaming hot water and gave it a vigorous shake then filled it with ice cold water. I’m going to leave it to chill in the fridge overnight and hopefully tomorrow morning I’ll have a cold and refreshing beverage.
I may add a drop or two of agave syrup if the taste is too “rustic”.
If Rosemary really does have anti-inflammatory and pain relieving benefits, I may make it a weekly staple for my workouts. If you try it and like it leave me some feedback and let me know what you think. Got a suggestion for alternative ingredients? Let me hear ‘em!
As shocking as it is to believe, I gave up fast food for a little while. Not because of health or fitness reasons, it was because I was getting a little tired of the customer service I was receiving. I’m not afraid to say that the main culprit was McDonald’s.
During my time away I can’t say that I noticed much of a change in anything measurable to the naked eye. Not that I was keeping note but my weight didn’t change up or down drastically, my health remained the same as did my energy levels and general state of mind. The benefits were: neutral.
The reason for breaking the “fast”? I came to the realization, with the help of the Spark People Nutrition Tracker, that with my schedule and budget the only way to reach my caloric needs was to add a fast food meal to my diet. I’ll concede that I could try a little harder to work out a healthier meal plan but with so much on my plate at the moment, no pun intended, there’s just no time.
If my estimates are correct, and I push harder in the gym I should be able to reach my weight goals on time.
Glad to be doing another “Munchie Monday” entry. Usually these are designed for healthy recipes but this time I decided to combine it with a product review.
The product I’m featuring is Trader Darwin’s Vanilla Flavored Soy Protein Powder. If I was doing a quick two word review this entry would end with “cake batter”. More on that later.
To give you a little background, I had been looking for a tasty and inexpensive protein supplement for a few months. Muscle Milk, Myoplex, and the GNC brands were all a little out of my price range. I’d been patiently waiting for a sale or price drop when one day I happened to be in Trader Joe’s for some snacks. I look up and notice they had a few varieties of powders for under $20! If you’ve ever bought protein powder then you know that it typically runs around $50 - $60 for about a month’s supply.
I looked over the choices they had a decided on the Soy Vanilla for the price and the fact that vanilla mixes well with a variety of flavors. One mistake I noticed making right out of the store is that I went with soy instead of whey. If there’s any truth to these claims then I was in for an unpleasant experience.
Let’s open up the jar!
First thing that hits you when you take a whiff? CAKE BATTER! Smells just like the stuff. Run your hands through it? CAKE BATTER! And why beat around the bush? Taste? FLIPPIN CAKE BATTER!
Don’t get me wrong. As a kid I LOVED licking the spoon and if I was lucky the whole damn bowl. This is different cake batter. Imagine flavorless, gritty cake batter. Now are we on the same page? Despite the label’s claim that it’s “vanilla” flavored, I have yet to taste anything of the sort.
I won’t go into full detail about how I’ve ingested it but I’ll tell you, for brevity’s sake, that I tried several different formulas. My standard low fat milk and powder approach yielded less than stellar results. Using the label’s recommendation of “water or your favorite juice” produced a surprisingly smoother concoction but still horribly flavorless. I tried instant coffee and milk with mildly pleasant results. Adding the powder to chocolate milk seemed to “unsweeten” the chocolate. About the best method was adding a bit of sugar and cinnamon with low fat milk. It definitely made the tastiest drink but flavor-wise was nothing compared to the pre-mixed drinks.
I am approximately half way done with this jar and honestly don’t plan on purchasing another can of the stuff. I will, however, give Trader Darwin’s Whey protein a try since I have a sneaking suspicion that the soy is what’s causing the bland flavor.
As far as health benefits go, I’ve taken it as recommended on average of 3 - 4 times a week. I’ve also done cardio and strength training about 3 - 5 days a week in that time as well. If the scale is accurate I’ve put on a solid 3 - 5 pounds. It would seem that there are some nutritional benefits to the product but since my “testing” wasn’t all that controlled there’s a lot of x factors out there.
In a nutshell: If you’re used to sweetened Muscle Milk or Myoplex, this isn’t the product for you. If you’re on a budget, you can stomach the product for the value you’re getting. If you’re a hardcore gainer, the 25g of protein it provides may not be enough for you. If you’re creative in the kitchen, please doctor this up and send me your recipe.

Normally for Munchie Monday I like to share a healthy, nutritious recipe of my own creation but it’s been a while since I’ve whipped anything up myself. Also, it doesn’t hurt to keep the Mardi Gras spirit alive by passing on this tasty sounding meal.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get a plate of leftovers from Marie and I haven’t tried out the recipe myself but you should know that I trust ANYTHING that’s recommended by Ms. Lanza.

A lot of you have been asking me about my recipes for the Mardi Gras goodness I cook up every year. Well here ya go!
I get a lot of my ingredients from Cajun Grocer – www.cajungrocer.com and the rest at my local grocery store.
Pistolettes – Cheese
-French dinner rolls
-Sausage (or meat of your choice)
-green onion, white onion, bell peppers
Pistolettes – Shrimp Etouffee
- LA Fish Fry, Etouffee Mix
-Shrimp (or meat of your choice)
For the Etoffee Mix, follow the instuctions on the packaging.
For the cheese pistolettes: Cut up the meat to small pieces. Sautee all veggies until soft. Mix everything into a bowl.
Pour mix into an icing tube with a large mouth or something like it. Take a knife or your finger and cut through almost other side. Then take your tube with the mix and fill the bread.
Bake at 375degrees until golden brown.
Chicken and Sausage Gumbo
I like a traditional dark roux. I order SAVOIE’s Old Fashion Roux (dark).
-Frozen bag of okra
-Skinless chicken – drumsticks, thighs
-Smoked, Spicy sausage of your choice
Season with Tony Chachere’s seasoning.
Follow the instructions on the Roux jar and ENJOY! Very easy.

The first one is for my fabuloso Vegan Berry Oatmeal Cookies
A little back story on these, I was bored one night and had the munchies(not that kind) and even though I’m not dieting I’m trying to be good about what I eat. That means I was doing everything in my power to avoid convenience store goodies. I got the idea to whip something up from scratch and saw I had everything I needed…except eggs. I googled “egg substitutes” and the results were not at all appetizing or practical. Then a link lead me to a Vegan site and I discovered that I could just skip the eggs all together. And thus these green bastards were born.
Now I have no nutrition training so I can’t provide any nutrition details for you. I suppose if enough people ask I can calculate them for you. Also note that when it came time to form the cookies I got a little heavy handed. I probably could have made two dozen but instead I ended up with ten. :/

Not to toot my own horn but the cookies came out pretty damn good and were a hit among my friends and co workers.
